Frame Material and Reading Glasses

The Right Decision
It's all about fashion and being savvy and in control when you finally give in to the fact that you need reading glasses. Or is it about function of womens or mens reading glasses, and how they finally bring everything into clear sight after months of struggling to decipher all kinds of written and typed text? The reading glass frame you select spotlights the personal image that you choose to reveal.

Metal frames account for about 70% of sales; plastic frames are often selected for their fashion statement. Frame types are full-rim, semi-rim and rimless. Full-rim are the sturdiest frames, and rimless, which are somewhat fragile, are the most subtle. The happy medium lies in semi-rim reading glasses with a frame at the top, and nylon wire holding lenses at the bottom.

The Right Stuff
Plastic reading glass frames are made from cellulose acetate, offer the largest array of colors and patterns, and are hypoallergenic. Plastic reading glasses adjust easily, but with time they discolor. European acetate resists brittleness better than Chinese acetate. You'll move on to a stronger lens before you wear out a plastic frame.

Nickel silver (nickel, copper, and sometimes zinc) reading glass frames are economical; they hold their shape, and need minimal adjustments. Monel (nickel, with copper and iron) is found in better-quality reading glass frames; it wears well and does not lose its color. Stainless steel (iron and chrome) is resilient, lightweight, and does not discolor or show signs of deterioration. Stainless steel reading glass frames are hypoallergenic and perfect for people with nickel and copper allergies.

Titanium is strong, lightweight and corrosion-free. Like stainless steel, titanium holds its color, and is hypoallergenic. The price tag on titanium reading glass frames will be the highest of any of the metal frames, but quality and aesthetic value makes titanium a sound investment. Memory metal is a combination of titanium and nickel. Memory metal reading glasses will hold their shape better than any other metal frame. Stretch it, twist it, sit on it - it springs back into shape!
